CELPIP, IELTS and PTE Core scores for each CLB level

IRCC sets a score range per skill for each CLB level. CELPIP matches CLB one to one; IELTS General Training and PTE Core use their own scales. Programs check each skill separately, so your lowest skill usually decides your level. For CELPIP correct answers out of 38, see the CELPIP score chart.

FAQ

CLB levels, explained.

Know your CLB? See your Express Entry CRS score.

What is a CLB level?

The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is the national standard IRCC uses to describe English ability for immigration (NCLC is the French equivalent). Every accepted test (CELPIP, IELTS, PTE Core, TEF, and TCF) converts to a CLB level for each skill.

How do CELPIP scores convert to CLB?

CELPIP-General is built around the benchmarks, so it maps one-to-one: a CELPIP 9 in Listening is CLB 9 in Listening. That is the cleanest mapping of any accepted test, with no conversion tables or rounding surprises.

Is my CLB the average of my four skills?

No. This calculator shows each skill separately and uses your lowest skill as an overall summary. Immigration programs can apply their own language requirements to each skill.

What CLB do I need for Express Entry?

CLB 7 is the Federal Skilled Worker language minimum; other programs use different thresholds. CLB 9 can meet skill-transferability conditions; core CRS language points continue increasing at CLB 10. This calculator does not determine immigration eligibility.
