A useful approach

  1. 1

    List what the person needs

Read the message first. Write “beginner” and “leave by noon” as the two requirements. The person wants a basic repair skill but does not name a particular repair or give a cost limit.

  2. 2

Find the facts for each choice

Read the headings and labels on the timetable or notice. For each session here, note its time, whether beginners can attend, and what the person needs to bring.

  3. 3

Check each choice against both needs

A session must accept beginners and finish by noon. Cross out a choice only when a stated fact rules it out, and write the reason. Zipper Replacement fits the time but requires sewing experience.

  4. 4

    Answer what the question asks

Return to the question or message blank. Does it ask for a session, a reason, or something to bring? Use the matching timetable detail, then check it against the person’s needs.

See it in an example

A neighbour needs a beginner repair session that finishes before an afternoon work shift.

Session times and requirements

Check the level as well as the time. Zipper Replacement ends at noon, but it requires sewing experience.

Check your understanding

Why is Zipper Replacement unsuitable for the neighbour?

A common mistake

Choosing a session after checking only its time.

Less useful: Zipper Replacement ends at noon, so it meets all the requirements.

More specific: Its time fits, but its experience requirement does not. Hemming Basics satisfies both conditions.

The session must fit both the time and the learner’s level. Finishing early enough does not make a session suitable for someone without the required experience.

Useful language in context

equipment provided

The organizer supplies the tools or items you need.

The pottery class has equipment provided, but bring an apron.

experience required

You need to have done the activity before or already know how to do it.

Previous road-riding experience is required for the advanced cycling session.

by noon

At or before twelve o’clock in the daytime.

Please submit the form by noon on Friday.

Try it yourself

  1. On paper, list the three sessions from the timetable above.
  2. For each session, answer two questions: does it finish by noon, and can a beginner attend?
  3. Choose the session where both answers are yes. Check the timetable again and write why each of the other sessions does not fit.
